Information about thermal wood processing:
By slowly heating the wood in an oxygen-poor atmosphere from 160 °C up to a maximum of 230 °C for several hours, the components of the wood change. This transformation provides our thermally treated wood sauna houses with several advantages:
The natural resistance of the wood to fungi and pests increases, as certain wood components that microorganisms thrive on are significantly broken down during the heating process.
The wood’s water absorption capacity decreases. Swelling, cracking, or shrinking of the wood is reduced. Maintenance costs for our thermally treated wood sauna houses are lower.
The hours-long heating process evaporates any trapped moisture.
The transformation process gives the wood a smoky scent, which fades over time. The color of the treated wood is dark to coffee brown.
Important maintenance instructions for thermally treated wood:
It is beneficial to regularly coat the wood with a protective layer to guard it against bluing and fungi. Those who appreciate the gray wood color resulting from weather exposure may forgo further treatment of thermally treated wood. Windows, doors, panels, and sauna benches are not made of thermally treated wood.
