About Thermally Treated Wood
Through slow heating in an oxygen-free atmosphere from 160 °C up to 230 °C over several hours, the wood components change. This transformation offers several advantages for our thermally treated wooden saunas:
- Natural resistance to fungal diseases and wood pests increases, as certain wood components that microorganisms thrive on break down during the heating process.
- Wood’s water absorption decreases. Swelling, cracking, or shrinking of wood is reduced, lowering maintenance costs for thermally treated saunas.
- Long hours of heating evaporate trapped moisture in the wood.
- The process gives the wood a smoky aroma, which fades over time. The color of treated wood is dark to coffee-brown.
Important Maintenance Instructions for Thermally Treated Wood
It is recommended to regularly coat the wood with a protective layer to prevent greying and fungal growth. Those who appreciate the natural greyish tone caused by weathering may skip further treatment for thermally treated wood. Windows, doors, panels, and sauna benches are not made from thermally treated wood.
